- Contextual placement — links inside real article content
- Vary anchors — branded, naked-URL and partial-match, never all exact-match
- Mind the ratio — keep exchanged links a minority alongside earned links and brand mentions
- Natural velocity — never exchange faster than you could earn links organically
- Prefer 3-way — use ABC exchanges to remove the direct footprint
What triggers a penalty
Google's link-spam policy targets excessive exchanges whose sole purpose is manipulation. Red flags include site-wide swaps, irrelevant partners, exact-match anchor stuffing and unnatural spikes. Avoid those and a reciprocal links penalty is very unlikely.
